What is Freestyle Chess?

Freestyle Chess, also known as Fischer Random Chess or Chess960, is a variation of chess designed to reduce the reliance on memorized opening theory and emphasize pure chess skill, creativity, and adaptability from the very first move.

What Makes It Unique?

• Randomized Starting Position: The core difference is that the pieces on the first and eighth ranks (excluding the pawns, which remain in their standard positions) are randomly shuffled before the game begins.
• Specific Conditions for Randomization: While random, there are two crucial conditions for the piece placement:
  • One bishop must be on a light-squared diagonal, and the other on a dark-squared diagonal.
  • The king must be placed between the two rooks, which allows castling to function as in classical chess.
